One thing I'm very proud of is my Silent Sages. They do have a short story...

Long ago, when the world was fresh and humans were young and foolish, their wars led to the near death of existence. In a tower close to the clouds, Three sage women watched with interest. They were not human, and could not fathom why the race had become so violent. The humans begged the sages for help, as they had done for many, many years, but the sages refused. The humans sank into despair, and instead tried an alternate route, begging the gods for help instead. The gods obliged and rescues the world, allowing it to flourish. Angered by the sage’s refusal however, they confronted them. The sages stated simply that humans were far too greedy, and untrustworthy, to be helped, and that by helping them the sage’s would condemn the humans to a life of reliance. In response, the gods turned the sages to stone but left their consciousness aware of the humans lives. They were charged to watch over the humans and hear all the humans thoughts until time itself ended. The sages wept in their eternal stone prison, slowly being driven to madness by the constant and unrelenting badgering thoughts of each and very human ever to live.

this is great. I really like the vine detail.

and for pesky background like that, I actually convert using iaza.com. You simply make all the areas you want transparent a color not in the pixel-- say, pink-- and upload it. From there, it's easy. You can also save the file as either PNG or gif, which I find very handy. ^-^ hope this helped a bit.
